Raymond E Feist – Magician Book 1 (Apprentice)

This book is very near and dear to me, and before carrying on about my review I would like to share our history together. When I was younger I didn’t have much care for reading. My English skills were just fine, I had an exponentially greater vocabulary and grasp of grammar than most my peers. It wasn’t until I was VERY bored (I didn’t play video games growing up) that I started digging through the closet to find something to do. I came across a box set of books my mom had. Beautiful imagery covered the box and I marveled as I read the titles of the stories:

The Rift War Saga: Magician Apprentice, Magician Master, Silverthorn, and A Darkness at Sethanon.

I cracked open apprentice and my whole view of fictional stories changed!

I was introduced to Pug, of the town Crydee, on the world of Midkemia. I learned of this orphans friends, family, and his rise from orphan to an apprentice mage and squire of the royal house. We are brought into a world that resembles 900 CE Earth.

We are introduced to Kulgan, the royal magician and his franklin Meecham. We meet Tomas, Pugs friend and adopted brother, and these youngsters dreams and ambitions for the future. Tomas wish to be the greatest warrior Midkemia has ever known. Pug too has aspirations to become a great warrior, but these plans are foiled when standing alone on the day of choosing (when Masters choose their apprentices) he is picked by his friend Kulgan to become a magician.

After struggling for many months, Pug learns there is something inside him that does not like to use magic in the way Kulgan is teaching. Pug has only successfully cast even the simplist cantrip under dire stress.

Before being able to study much farther, Tomas and Pug are requested to accompany the Duke Borric to the capitol of the kingdom Rillianon.On the way there the group is ambushed by otherworlders. Tomas is seperated from the group and left to find his own way.

I could dribble on about this story, and believe me there is much to speak of, but I think maybe you should just go pick up a copy and see for yourself. Enjoy

I ran across this book years back while shopping at a local target. I have never been the book reading type of girl, when I seen the title I just had to read more! A Shoe addicted Betsy Taylor finds herself on the eve of her birthday undead and unemployed to satisfy her shoe addiction Betsy must find a night time job. How does a newly risen vamp land a job? Betsy isn’t your run of the mill vamp either she loves wearing crosses and holy water doesn’t scare her! This is a classic Wizards of the Coast (Formely TSR, 1989) Novel. Writen by Margaret Weis and Don Perrin. This novel takes place after The Soul Forge and shows the story of Caramon and Raistlin Majere’s journay through military training. This book add’s tremendious depth to Raistlin’s character and shows us signs of humility and even love.

For military buff’s Perrin’s takes on military matter are wonderful! This story also covers a lot of ground in foreshadowing the stories of the DragonLance Chronicles and Legends series. Raistlin and Caramon enlist in the Mad Baron of Langtree’s Militia. While not a knight himself, the Baron is of a good heart and is seen as a generally acceptable person. Caramon naturally finds himself in the special forces unit of the infantry.

The twins are scheduled to march on the somewhat prophetically named town of “Hope’s End.” After a long but fairly unencumbered trip to Hope’s End(named for the hope river) the twins find themselves in the presence of an ugly looking army headed by a foul creature of a man. Raistlin also finds himself running into a fellow red robbed wizard Immolatus.

All is not as it seems as Kitiara uth Matar, the twins half sister shows up, and is working with Immolatus on the god’s know what. If you have not read the other series mentioned Soul Forge and this would be a great place to start. For those of you that have read the classics, this novel will not disappoint! I can’t say much more without giving away the plot, but this book will please all Weis fans, and I was pleased with Perrin’s takes, you can see and feel the influence throughout.
