A Christmas Story
Does your family have a traditional Christmas film you watch around the holidays? Well let me tell you about mine. Growing up, my dad and I watched “A Christmas Story.” This classic is centered around ‘Ralphie’ Ralph Parker(Peter Billingsley) and his obsession over an official ‘Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle‘. The story takes us through the life of Ralph and his brother Randy( Ian Petrella) as they deal with mean teachers, angry bullies and young men’s urge to lick the frost on a metal pole. The common bane to Ralphie’s goal of owning his rifle is the urban (and self fulfilling) legend of ”You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”; Ralph’s mom, his teacher, and even Santa himself go as far as to tell him such! The angst of learning he won’t get his air gun pushes him over the edge when he attacks the school bully and beats him senseless.
This movie is filled with great themes that everyone can relate to. Getting caught in your childhood lies, to cursing in front of your parents. I have to thank Director Bob Clark, Writers Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and again Mr. Clark for all the wonderful memories I have of watching this movie.
You can find this movie just about anywhere and if you haven’t seen it I highly suggest that you do when you get a chance. lately I’ve noticed it showing up less and less, and I pray that the Turner Networks will keep them alive!
